suggested rule ammendment--long absence

Post by Myds6 on Sun Jan 03, 2016 6:13 am

I just want to suggest a rule amendment. This board has been lively before, and what kills it is when, due to having a reasonable life with reasonable amounts of things to do, some of us can't post regularly to a thread they are part of.

What I suggest is that, if someone doesn't make a move for a set amount of time (2 days?) the other player, or the GM can move the story along. This isn't meant o be a punishment; it's to encourage posting, and to keep a lack of posting from paralyzing things.

I'm not saying this in regard to anything going on right now, just to prevent new threads from dying out like my epic fairy thread, the Sylvan crown did.

I further suggest a couple of guidelines about posting for other people:

1) the poster tries as much as possible to follow the character's personality traits.
2) the other writer doesn't take "undue" advantage of the situation. For example, if you're fighting in the arena, and you're gone for days, the other player can roll for you and, if your character ends up getting stripped, so be it. "Undue" advantage would be that "somehow" your character only rolls 1s for the next 5 rounds, and its over. If you're playing strip poker, you might lose around in absentia, if the rolls went that way, etc.

I'm not complaining about people being unable to post--it happens to all of us, and it's life. But I'm also not very competitive about "winning" here, since I make characters I might enjoy seeing lose as much as I enjoy seeing them win. So, I don't know how other people will feel about this, but it seems like a good way to keep things here going strong.

That said, anyone mind if I finish up the Sylvan Crown? I had more plot to happen. Anyone who's already in it can chime in as you see fit.

No objections to the proposed changes.

I'm absolutely fine with that. Assuming the missing person/s can return at a later date without too much fuss, I'd say this is only fair. And that's coming from someone with a chronic case of falling off the face of the earth.

If we make this little change, I would think it would prevent the large-scale desertions that happen when someone doesn't post for a while. And of course they are welcome to come back without fuss!
